Center to get gibbons from Fla., Ohio

Tuesday, August 19
updated 8:54 am

When it comes to the mating game, the destiny of some animals lies in the hands of zookeepers.

In the case of a pair of white-handed gibbons that will arrive this fall at the Natural Science Center of Greensboro, staff members at three zoos got involved in the matchmaking process.

Glenn Dobrogosz, executive director of the Natural Science Center, announced Monday that the center's zoo expects to get Leslie, an 11-year-old female gibbon from Florida's Lion Country Safari, and Dempsey, a male half her age from the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium. The pair will be a part of the gibbon Species Survival Plan.

News of their arrival comes as Dobrogosz and his staff prepare to honor Beau and Jambi, a pair of white-handed gibbons that died in July during routine annual exams. Beau and Jambi were a popular attraction at the center's zoo since it opened in May. The cause of their death is still under investigation.
