Chancellor helps with move in

UNCG's most influential freshman met with some of her fellow newbies today. With less than a month under her belt Chancellor Linda Brady met with freshmen students moving into the Grogan Hall dorm this morning.

Brady said she looks forward to move-in day and commencement more than any other days in the academic year. Meeting and greeting students and parents is something she's done every year she's been an administrator.

"We want parents to know we're going to take care of their children," Brady said. More than 1,200 students will move in dorms today with more than 4,400 expected to live on campus this school year. Classes begin Monday.

Brady took a turn handing out information pamphlets about the school's amenities to students and mingled with them and their parents between periods of being mobbed by reporters and staffers eager to show off improvements at the dorm.

Sophomore Brandie Reeder sat alongside Brady while prepping new students for their move in. A political science major, Reeder was excited to hear about her new chancellor's long history in the subject.

Brady spent seven years in Washington D.C. working under the Carter and Reagan administrations in foreign diplomacy and disarmament, including a stint in the Office of the Secretary of Defense.

She was the University of Oregon provost before coming to UNCG. She also served as the dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at North Carolina State University from 2001 through 2006.

Reeder hopes Brady will make raising the academic bar at UNCG a priority.

"I don't want to get to law school and get hit in the face with the academic challenge," she said.

Brady is refining her priority list and anticipates having it finalized for a memo to UNC system President Erskine Bowles within a week or so.
