Meet an Artist: Chuck Carroll

His Radio Show's Theme:

It's pretty free form, really. It doesn't really focus on one genre of music, but all types. I'll play new music and mix it in with all kinds of things and see how the show goes. I'll play some loud, noisy, punk stuff, follow it with some Brit pop, then some world music, as well. I mean really all kinds.

How Joan Jett changed his life:

When I was kind of young, I was actually on this cruise ship, and there weren't many kids. There was maybe like 10 kids. They had activities for us, so we went down to the little disco to get to know each other, and they were playing music in there, trying to make it lively, and I remember (hearing) "I Love Rock and Roll" by Joan Jett, and I hadn't ever heard it before, and I was like, "Hey, man, what's this song here?" Then this kid in this condescending voice goes, "Dude, it's only like the No. 1 song in America?" I turned all red because I wasn't thinking about all this new music that was out at the time. That was one kind of thing that made me want to start listening to all kinds of music.

How he got into college radio:

I went to Guilford and knew they had a station but didn't know too much about it. The first year I was there, I didn't do a show, but I had some friends who did, and I hung out with them while they did their shows, and it really just seemed like a lot of fun. Actually, when I first started, everyone just had one show, but I did a show every day at seven in the morning just because I wanted to do it so bad, which is pretty tough for a college student. I don't know how I made it to Friday every week, I just really got into it. Just having this whole library of stuff to listen to, then finding new, cool stuff, too, and sharing that with people.

His Radio errors:

I've definitely locked myself out of the station a couple of times. I'll be going to the bathroom, and I've got my one song lined up, and I'll run down the hall. Then you have to go to security, which is like three buildings away . It wasn't too terrible, not good, but just a few minutes of dead air. I think one time I was lucky enough to have the CD player set to continuous, so that was good. It did five songs from the same artist.

WQFS-WUAG rivalry:

I don't think it's real intense or anything like that. I don't think it's a rivalry. I know sometimes we'll get together and play kickball or something like that. I think it's just cool that Greensboro is not that huge of a town, but they have two real good college radio stations.

His comfort album:

I don't know if I have one total "comfort album," but one that I go back to again and again is "The Colour of Spring" by the band Talk Talk. They're kind of a new wave band. It's their third album, and it's pretty mellow, but it's also very orchestral. It's just one that you can kind of turn on and listen to all night .
